Huntington Woods Community Center
The Huntington Woods Community Center is the AIA Detroit Award Winning project for the City of Huntington Woods Recreaction Department. The project removed portions of the out-dated and underused recreation building and constructed a new pool, gymnasium and all new and updated multi-purpose spaces.
The building established a civic presence for the Huntington Woods community through an addition to the existing recreation center. A sense of arrival and place is evoked through the articulation
in the landscape and the entry facade to the community. New program includes a new entry lobby, recognition hall, game areas, and multi-function activities area. Outdoor spaces were looked at as
extensions of the indoor spaces during the warmer months of the year.
Conceptually, Huntington Woods is an exploration of definition, civic presence, transparencies, and layers. By carefully positioning the main spine of the building at the literal center of the
city, we sought to strengthen the symbolic center as well. By inserting transparent layers to offer views from the outside to the inside and then back out again, we sought to de-laminate and
explode the "boxiness" of a traditional gymnasium. The building offers a civic face to the community with traditional masonry and block. The bowed roof peeks playfully over the facade to give an
idea of the dynamic spaces within the building.
The design process started with meetings with a designated committee. Throughout the process, the existing recreation center was evaluated for renovations and new program additions. Our project team developed a schematic design package of plans, elevations, and physical model. The package was affirmed by the community with a passing vote on a bond issue to fund the project. Our project team has continued to maintain communication with the original committee with on-going design reviews.
