Hillwood House

The Hillwood House in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  The Developer, SVM Development, bought a 60's era house in Bloomfield Hills as a speculative home with the idea to completely transform the house into a house more fitting of the times.  studiozONE architects, Paul Matelic and Julie Kim, came up with a design which completely transformed the spatial organization of the house while at the same time completely changing its character.

Before Photos  The house sat on a heavily wooded site with a considerable change in grade from the front of the house towards the rear of the house.  The houses presence was very unassuming with its low profile and horizontal lines.

After Photos  The former one-story house has been completely transformed with the addition of the 2nd story.  A new canopy marks the front entrance and leads into a two-story, naturally lit entry with custom-designed stairs tying the lower level to the second story.  The entrance flows through into the living space and out onto the new deck at the rear of the house.
